Drainage structure in Corning, New York
A drainage structure allows for water to drain through the levee in Corning, New York to the Chemung River. The manhole in the foreground houses a sluice gate, which provides a secondary line of defense on pipes in the levee in case the flap-gate gets stuck open. Devices like flap-gates and sluice gates prevent water from backing up through the pipe, which would result in flooding.
