Baltimore District is part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' North Atlantic Division. With more than 1,300 employees, it is the largest of six districts in the division and one of 14 Corps districts worldwide with both a civil works and military construction mission. Our fiscal 2009 program is approximately $2.1 billion, and our area of responsibility covers the District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, portions of southern New York and parts of northern Virginia. We are responsible for water resource development in the Susquehanna and Potomac River drainage basins and the Chesapeake Bay north of the Maryland-Virginia line.

Civil Works (CW)

Our civil works responsibilities include the construction and operation of dams for flood control, water quality and water supply; maintenance dredging of commercial waterways; construction of local flood protection projects; Chesapeake Bay initiatives such as shoreline erosion control, debris removal, dredging and habitat creation; regulation of construction on waterways and wetlands; and protection of the public by responding to floods, hurricanes and other natural or national emergencies. A few of our current civil works projects include the environmental restoration of the Anacostia River in the District of Columbia and Maryland; reconstruction of Poplar Island in the Chesapeake Bay; and oyster recovery projects in Virginia and Maryland.

Support for Others (SFO)

The District also oversees engineering, construction and real estate projects for the Army, Air Force and other Department of Defense agencies. Projects include military housing, reserve centers, laboratories, medical facilities, training, maintenance and recreational facilities. We support such historic places as Arlington National Cemetery, Armed Forces Retirement Home and Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Military Construction (MILCON)

Our military construction program supports 15 military installations and a $3 billion base realignment and closure program that includes the construction of a $1.8 billion dollar National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency east coast headquarters, other training facilities, labs and barracks.

Environmental (EMDC)

Baltimore's Environmental and Munitions Design Center provides expertise for the region and serves as a national military munitions design center. Their missions include hazardous, toxic and radioactive waste and military munition clean-up projects. We currently operate at a multi-million dollar per year level under the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for active and former installations; base realignment and closure projects; Superfund; civil works and other agencies.

Overseas Contingency Operations (OCOs)

Since 2005, approximately 300 District employees have deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan and other locations around the world in support of overseas contingency operations.

Washington Aqueduct (WAD)

A unique mission of the Baltimore District is providing water to the District of Columbia. The Washington Aqueduct, dating to 1852, supplies drinking water to more than one million residents of the District of Columbia, Arlington County and Falls Church, Virginia.
