Construction work at Poplar Island expansion site
Large rocks are placed at the expansion site in April 2016 to armor dikes that will eventually contain dredged material from the approach channels to the Port of Baltimore. The expansion, authorized by Congress in 2007, allowed the project to expand beyond Poplar Island’s 1846 footprint to create an additional 575 acres of dredged material containment and environmental restoration. Construction of the expansion containment cells is set to wrap-up in summer 2020. (U.S. Army photo by David Gray)
