Environmental restoration at Poplar Island
Planted marsh grasses thrive within a containment cell at Poplar Island May 22, 2019. Chesapeake Bay native marsh grasses are planted within the dredged material containment cells at Poplar Island to create remote island habitat. Once complete, Poplar Island will contain 68 million cubic yards of dredged material, creating 776 aces of tidal wetlands, 829 acres of upland habitat and a 110-acre open water embayment area in the Chesapeake Bay.
