USACE, Baltimore District
Published April 9, 2024

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District announces that the Howell Run Picnic Area at Jennings Randolph Lake will remain closed for the 2024 recreation season due to construction.

The area, which closed in May 2023, will undergo a bank stabilization project that is expected to last through September 2024. This closure will allow contractors to complete the stabilization project before the end of the year. All picnic shelter reservation holders have been contacted and issued refunds for the 2024 season. This closure will not affect recreation outside of the Howell Run Picnic Area. There is a reserveable picnic shelter available in the Robert W. Craig Campground. Visit www.recreation.gov  to make reservations from May 1 – September 30.

The Lakeside Trail, which connects Shaw Beach to the Howell Run Picnic Area, will be closed at the picnic area. If you plan to utilize the trail, you are prohibited from entering the picnic area at the end of the trail.

Some phases of construction are expected to minimally impact traffic on the project access road. For the safety of the contractors and visiting public, a traffic light will be installed while construction is ongoing near the main access road. Please use caution when entering and exiting the project.
