Raystown Lake to host Wheelin’ Sportsmen Deer Hunt this weekend

Published Dec. 3, 2014

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Raystown Lake along with the Terrace Mountain Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, and other local sponsors will host the 13th Annual Chris Bowser Wheelin’ Sportsmen Hunt Dec. 13.

Raystown Lake annually opens restricted hunting areas for one day to allow hunters with a disability the chance to harvest a deer.

This specialized hunt functions as part of a management plan for the Corps of Engineers to bring the over abundant deer population under control and reduce further damage to native vegetation.

Although the event is held on the last day of deer season, several volunteers donate their time and give up what may be their last opportunity to harvest a deer to help others. The volunteers fulfill a wide variety of tasks including assisting hunters at their blinds, moving the deer, and preparing lunch for participants.

For more information about applying to hunt, how to donate or how to volunteer, call park ranger Tara Whitsel at 814-658-6811 or email Tara.J.Whitsel@usace.army.mil.
