    Generations on the Water

    Born in Cecil County, Baltimore District’s Jacob Tuer was destined for a life on the water. His neighborhood had a slip for the family boat, and he spent countless hours on jon boats cruising the Elk River with his father, Jeff, who operated survey vessels for the Baltimore District from 2014 to 2018. But when a container ship struck the Key Bridge, leading to its collapse and blocking a vital shipping channel, another member of this family of Maryland watermen, Jacob’s brother Matthew, found his path converging with his brother’s in an unexpected way.

    When the sun rose over the Patapsco River on March 26, it unmasked a shadow of tragedy and despair. The historic Francis Scott Key Bridge was destroyed, the M/V DALI sat immovable in the Fort McHenry Federal Channel, six lives were lost, thousands were out of work and the flow of commerce into and out of the Port of Baltimore was brought to a halt. Knowing the mission to come, it was that morning when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District Public Affairs Office would rally its extensive communications capabilities.

    In the early morning of March 26, 2024, crew aboard Motor Vessel DALI issued the mayday call moments before the crash that took down the Francis Scott Key Bridge, enabling authorities to limit vehicle traffic on the span. The collapse of this pivotal piece of infrastructure sent eight construction workers into the Patapsco River below, taking the lives of six of them.

    USACE Anacostia River dock upgrades enhance environmental rehabilitation

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District’s, DC Field office dock will house the newly arriving NACOTCHTANK Floating Crane in the District of Columbia alongside the Anacostia River. The DC Drift Program planned rehabilitation and modification of the mooring piers at the site location to help aid in the offloading of debris collected by the DC Drift Program vessels. Local contractors performed construction modifications to help enable the District’s ability to protect environmental habitat, improve water quality and aesthetics, and expand public access within the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Additionally, USACE boat operators conduct routine debris patrols and respond to debris calls received from the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, boat and marina operators, and private citizens. Lastly, the program’s year-round drift removal operations benefit navigation efforts by reducing damages, financial loss, and safety hazards to commercial and recreational vessels, operators, and docking facilities.

    The Honorable Michael Connor, Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, conducted his first port visit since confirming his position in November 2021. He accompanied senior leaders from USACE Headquarters and North Atlantic Division to witness the Baltimore District's Chesapeake Bay restoration and protection operations. Mission partners from the Maryland Port Administration and Ports America Chesapeake showcased how the Baltimore District's Chesapeake Bay protection and restoration efforts help streamline logistics and supply chain improvements for the nation's top e-commerce port destination.

    From the Wicomico River to Deal Island

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, and several local, state and federal agencies have been partnering up to find a new placement site on the eastern shore of Maryland for material dredged from the Wicomico River. After extensive research and evaluation, USACE and partners agreed on the Deal Island Wildlife Management Area in Somerset County to hold the material and also provide beneficial long-term environmental benefits.

    Critical study to help Port of Baltimore meet vessel needs

    With its existing 50-foot deep channel and Neo-Panamax cranes, the Port of Baltimore is already able to accommodate some of the largest container ships in the world, and has experienced significant growth in containers in recent years. Baltimore District is teaming up with the Maryland Port Administration to ensure future capacity needs are met.
