The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Baltimore District, has begun the third five-year review of the New Cumberland Army Depot Formerly Used Defense Site, also known as Marsh Run Park. The process will evaluate the remedies that were implemented by the Record of Decision to clean up the site, and the subsequent Explanation of Significant Difference to the decision.
The site, located adjacent to Mifflin Avenue and Marsh Run Road, in Fairview Township, York County, Penn., contains an old, capped landfill associated with mainly construction debris from the former New Cumberland Army Depot. In the 1980’s the groundwater on-site was found to be contaminated with chlorinated volatile organic compounds. USACE has completed the remediation of the area, and the environmental monitoring confirmed that the site is safe for recreational use. In 2015, USACE finished the restoration of Marsh Run Park to recreational soccer fields.
Once the third five-year review process is completed, anticipated date sometime in January 2025, the Review will be available on the Baltimore District environment Public Notice site https://www.nab.usace.army.mil/Missions/Environmental/Formerly-Used-Defense-Sites/
