    Dam operators and engineers began providing 24/7 monitoring of the project to measure the water level, the water pressure against the earthen structure and outflows downstream to ensure the dam was performing as designed for the community.

    Sayers dam successfully prevents major Tropical Depression Gordon and Florence floods

    After rainfall from Tropical Depression Gordon had already inundated Foster Joseph Sayers Lake and Tropical Depression Florence was on its way, Baltimore District personnel answered the call to protect the surrounding communities from major floods.
  • Baltimore District dam operator, Kirk Wirth, works to prepare Foster Joseph Sayers Dam for the expected rainfall from Tropical Depression Florence this week.  Baltimore District will continue to closely monitor Tropical Depression Florence and is actively working with local and federal partners to ensure a safe and reliable flood risk management program.

Before being shutdown in 1976, the STURGIS’ nuclear reactor, MH-1A, was used to generate electricity for military and civilian use in the Panama Canal.

    First DOD mitigation banking instrument for Maryland unveiled

    The U.S. Air Force at Joint Base Andrews, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Maryland Department of the Environment, GreenTrust Alliance and GreenVest LLC announced the completion of the first Umbrella Mitigation Banking Instrument for the Department of Defense in Maryland during an event held at The Courses at Andrews, Sept. 6, 2018. The first site to be restored under the UMBI is Mattawoman Creek in Pomfret, which is in Charles County. The entire project yields nearly 38 wetland credits and almost 1,600 stream credits to provide potential mitigation for planned construction efforts on JBA, such as runway construction or expansion.

    Baltimore District welcomes 68th commander in traditional change of command ceremony

    Col. John T. Litz became the 68th commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, during a military change of command ceremony this morning at the Radisson Hotel downtown. He assumed leadership from Col. Edward P. Chamberlayne who had commanded Baltimore District since July 2015.

    Army Corps to host public meeting on levee systems, flood risk management

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is hosting a public meeting July 18 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Smart Energy Building at Binghamton University (85 Murray Hill Road in Vestal) to present on and discuss levee systems in Broome, Chenango and Tioga counties along with other flood risk management-related topics like flood mapping, insurance and preparedness.
  • The temporary “No Wake” zone can be seen on the attached map. The zone begins approximately 600 feet south of Seven Points Marina, extending southward for a distance of approximately 0.3 miles and across the entire lake extending east to west.
