  • Jeffrey McMaster, resident engineer at the Fort Detrick Area Office, received the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, Hero of the Year award from District Engineer and Commander Col. Trey Jordan at a Sept. 16 ceremony. He earned the District award for his poise and professionalism following the August 2013 laboratory fire at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases replacement project. He provided accurate and timely reporting to Corps leaders in the aftermath of the incident.

    New inter-agency team starts work on innovative online flood mapping tool for Washington D.C.

    The Corps is among a newly-formed inter-agency team starting work on a $291,000 online mapping tool project that will help government leaders, emergency managers, and the public better predict flood impacts during high-water events in the D.C. metropolitan area. This tool will provide two sets of maps: one that shows predicted riverine flooding along the Potomac River, and another that shows predicted tidal/storm surge flooding along the Potomac and Anacostia rivers.

    Corps of Engineers seeks input from Tred Avon recreational boat users for oyster restoration construction

    The Corps is seeking information until Oct. 15, 2014, specifically related to the draft needed for passage of vessel in the Tred Avon River and the location of docks and moorings and the pathways to access these docks and moorings for potential near-shore construction sites. Construction of oyster reefs for restoration at select sites may reduce water depths by at most 1 foot.
  • Two vessels belonging to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, will be participating in the Star-Spangled Spectacular festivities, taking place throughout the Baltimore area September 10-16.  The Linthicum, a hydrographic research vessel, and the Reynolds, a debris removal vessel, will be providing free public ship tours from 12:00 to 17:00 each of those days.  Star-Spangled Spectacular is a free festival that celebrates the 200th anniversary of our National Anthem.
