    PSA – Army Corps advises boaters to stay clear of Poplar Island construction zone over Labor Day weekend

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District cautions the public about the construction zone at Poplar Island over the Labor Day weekend. Due to expected increase in boating activities the District urges boaters to stay clear from this area.

The project is a partnership between the Corps of Engineers and the Maryland Port Administration that focuses on restoring and expanding island habitat at James and Barren islands to provide thousands of acres of wetland and terrestrial habitat for fish, shellfish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals through the beneficial use of material dredged primarily from Baltimore Harbor approach channels.

    Army Corps, Maryland Port Administration sign agreement moving Chesapeake island restoration forward

    The agreement allows for final design to begin on restoring two islands in the mid-Chesapeake Bay that have experienced significant erosion over the past several decades. This work will bring tremendous environmental benefits, while ensuring that channels leading to and from the Port of Baltimore are maintained for decades to come by creating capacity for the placement of dredged material.

    Twenty-five years of work at Poplar Island brings improved habitat, expanded use of dredged material

    For the past 25 years, the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island has built island habitat in the Chesapeake Bay. Since 1994, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, and its partners have been working to restore remote island habitat in the Chesapeake Bay by beneficially using dredged material at Poplar Island.

    POPLAR ISLAND, Md. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, urges boaters in the Chesapeake Bay to steer clear of the construction zone off of Poplar Island during the Fourth of July’s expected increase in boating activities.

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District Geologist Brian Shedd looks at the top of the soil layer in the recently completed scaled model aquifer February 26, 2019, constructed at the Corps’ Fort McHenry Yard as part of a Department of Defense Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program research project he is leading. The research is using the scaled aquifer model to learn more about how an emerging contaminant known as PFAS behave in soil and groundwater in a setting where chemistry and aquifer conditions can be controlled. This type of information is important to designing future cleanup methodologies and measuring their effectiveness in addressing PFAS contamination.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District managed the final decommissioning and dismantling of the STURGIS, the Army’s former floating nuclear power plant, and in addition to safely removing more than 1.5 million pounds of radioactive material the project team was able to recycle approximately 600,000 pounds of lead and more than 5,000 tons of steel and other assorted recyclables.
