    Sand is pumped onto the beach at Ocean City in 1991 as part of initial construction of the beach berm and dune that are parts of the existing coastal storm risk management project. The Corps of Engineers, working closely with the state of Maryland and Ocean City, has continued to maintain the project over the years, and it has prevented an estimated nearly $1 billion in damages since initial construction.

  • Sand is pumped onto the beach near what is likely meant to be McComas Avenue, near 123rd Street now. The training dikes are barriers of sand used to help keep freshly pumped sand in the area while allowing water to flow back to the Atlantic Ocean.

Ed Chamberlayne, commander, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, signed a symbolic Watershed Assessment Cost-Sharing Agreement with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) to begin work on the Chesapeake Bay Comprehensive Water Resources and Restoration Plan (Comp plan) during a Chesapeake Bay Program Principals’ Staff Committee meeting at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Headquarters in Washington, May 26, 2016. The final cost-sharing agreement document was officially signed on July 22, 2016.

Chamberlayne is a member of the Principals' Staff Committee, which acts as the policy advisors to the Chesapeake Bay Executive Council. EPA is the federal lead for the committee.

The lesson is only one portion of a new water education program, 'Raystown Lake: Protecting your Future, One Drop at a Time!', that aims to provide students an understanding of the value of water resources in their community, as well as general knowledge regarding the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ mission in providing water-based needs to the Raystown Lake area and surrounding communities.

Raystown Lake was one of 186 federal sites selected to receive a 2015 field trip grant from the National Park Foundation (NPF), the official charity of America’s national parks. The grant, part of NPF’s Open OutDoors for Kids Program, supports the White House’s Every Kid in a Park youth initiative, which provides  fourth-grade children and their families a pass granting free access to national parks, forests, and wildlife refuges.

A record-setting 154 people participated in the event.
