Beach Rules & Tips

Knowing the rules and planning ahead will help you save a lot– time, stress, money and maybe a life!  Plan before you go and get the most out of your vacation.

Raystown lands and waters are subject to Federal rules and regulations under Title 36.  Copies of Title 36 are posted on bulletin boards and available from a ranger, or the Visitor Center.  The following is a partial list of rules provided to address common beach related questions and concerns.Rangers patrol the beaches. Lost kids, brochures, band-aids, we're here to help!

  • Keep your pet happy, families safe, and our beaches clean.  Pets are not permitted on the beaches or surrounding grassy areas.
  • Glass and bare feet do not mix.  No glass bottles or containers.
  • Beaches are inspected and maintained to create a safe area for visitors to swim.  Buoy lines keep swimmers inside the safety zone – do not cross the buoy line.
  • Would you play with a fire extinguisher with the safety of others at stake?  Don’t play or sit on the buoy lines.
  • Beaches are open from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM – that’s plenty of time for fun in the sun.  Stay out of the water when the beaches are closed.  When in doubt, see if the life rings are out.
  • No one wants to sunbathe next to trash or old fire rings.  Please pickup litter and use the grills provided. There are cigarette litter containers installed at both beaches. Cigarette butts are considered litter, please dispose of properly.
  • Raystown beaches do not have lifeguards and beachgoers swim at their own risk.
  • Check the bulletin boards at the beaches for the latest beach information.
