Swimming

1. On the west side of the day use area at South Shore Recreation Area, there is a grass beach with a concrete base swimming area. The swimming area is marked with beach floats and buoys for swimmer safety.  A bathhouse and concession are located nearby. Loaner life jackets are available at the South Shore Recreation Area Beach and the South Shore Ranger Station. 

2. At the Tompkins Campground, there is a grass beach with a concrete base swimming area available for campers only. The swimming area is marked with beach floats and buoys for swimmer safety. A bathhouse and concession are located nearby. Loaner life jackets are available at the Tompkins Campground Beach and the Tompkins Camp Control Building.

Both of these areas are open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Swimming Safety

  • Swimming is only permitted in designated swim areas when they are open and staffed.
  • No lifeguards are on duty—swim at your own risk.
  • Never swim alone.
  • Supervise children closely at all times.
  • Avoid swimming during high water, poor visibility, or storm conditions.
  • Paddling & Personal Watercraft
  • Wear a life jacket at all times.
  • Be aware of fluctuating water levels and submerged hazards.
  • Stay clear of dams, spillways, and restricted areas—strong currents can exist even when water appears calm.
