Trail Etiquette

Travel Responsibility Respect Others
  • Obtain a trail map.

  • Make a plan and stick to it.

  • Always tell someone of your travel plans.

  • Carry water and emergency supplies even on short hikes.

  • Check the weather forecast.  Plan clothing, equipment, and supplies accordingly.

  • Buddy up, reduce your vulnerability during an accident.
  • Stay on the trail even if it’s rough
    and muddy.

  • Walking on the track edges and
    cutting switchbacks increases damage, causes erosion and visual scarring.

  • Walk single file to avoid widening
    the trail.

  • Flagging trails is unsightly.  If you
    flag, remove it as you leave.

  • Follow all signs and respect barriers.

  • Avoid sensitive areas like meadows, lakeshores, wetlands and streams.

  • Do not disturb historical archeological or paleontological sites.

  • Avoid “spooking” wildlife you encounter and keep your distance.

  • Carry a trash bag and pick up litter
    left by others.

  • Pack out what you pack in.

  • Pick up any pet wastes.

  • Plan ahead.  Use the restrooms provided at Seven Points and boat launches.

Rules & Tips

Knowing the rules and planning ahead will help you save a lot – time, stress, money and maybe a life!  Plan before you go and get the most out of your vacation!

Raystown lands and waters are subject to Federal rules and regulations under Title 36.  Copies of Title 36 are posted on bulletin boards and available from a ranger, or the Visitor Center.   The following is a partial list of rules provided to address common trail related questions and concerns.

  • Some trails are not readily accessible and cell phone coverage is limited. Please use caution and plan ahead!

  • Unless otherwise posted, all trails are open year-round.

  • There is no fee for using trails or trailhead parking.

  • Motorized equipment and horses are not permitted.

  • Trailside or “back country” camping is not permitted. Camping is only permitted in designated areas.

  • Pets must be physically restrained at all times by a 6 ft. leash while at trailheads and established recreation areas.

  • Parking can be limited at trailheads. Please park in designated spaces.

  • Hunting is permitted outside of established recreation areas. As many of our trails travel through hunting areas, we encourage trekkers to know the hunting seasons and to be safe, wear orange or bright colored clothing!

  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers prohibits the dumping of human wastes on project lands or into project waters. Please plan ahead and use the facilities provided.
